Why CaboLabs Exists

Healthcare organizations keep solving the same problems. Fragmented clinical data, integration projects that never finish, systems that cannot communicate with each other. The solutions exist. The standards exist. What is often missing is the practical experience to apply them correctly in real clinical environments.

After years working on openEHR implementations, HL7 integration platforms, FHIR APIs and nationwide health initiatives, we concluded that the biggest barrier to better healthcare IT was not technology. It was knowledge: knowing which standards apply to a given problem, how to design clinical data models that survive system changes, and how to build integrations that hold up in production rather than just passing a conformance test.

CaboLabs was founded in 2012 to bring that expertise directly to organizations that needed it. We combine consulting, software and education not because it is convenient to offer multiple services, but because they are different ways of sharing the same accumulated practical knowledge.

Mission

Help healthcare organizations build information systems that are interoperable, standards-based and designed to last. We do this through consulting that addresses real architecture and integration problems, software that encapsulates solutions to recurring challenges, and education that equips teams to make better technical decisions on their own.

We are not here to push technology. We are here to help organizations choose the right tools, avoid the mistakes we have already seen, and build systems that remain valuable as requirements change.

Vision

A healthcare landscape where patient information moves reliably between systems, clinical data is stored in formats that survive application changes, and technology decisions are made with a long-term view. A world where open standards like openEHR, FHIR and HL7 are implemented correctly — not just adopted in name.

We want to contribute to that future by making the expertise required to build it more accessible to the organizations that need it.

Values

These values define how we work, not just how we describe ourselves.

Transparency

We say what we know and what we do not. We are direct about risks, limitations and trade-offs. If a proposed solution will not work in a given context, we say so — even when it is not what a customer expects to hear.

Professionalism

We deliver what we commit to. We document our work, follow engineering best practices, and hold ourselves to the same standards we recommend to our customers. Every engagement is treated as if it were the only one.

Trust

We work with our customers, not just for them. Long-term relationships require honest communication, consistent quality and the willingness to disagree constructively when the situation calls for it.

Excellence

Healthcare systems affect patients. The quality of the work matters. We invest time understanding problems thoroughly before proposing solutions, and we do not cut corners on technical correctness.

Our Story

How CaboLabs evolved from a first encounter with openEHR to an international practice in healthcare IT consulting, software and education.

2006
First exposure to openEHR

Working on a critical care EMR, we encountered openEHR for the first time — a specification for flexible, future-proof clinical data architectures. That project shaped the direction of everything that followed.

2011
Nationwide EHR initiative and first online openEHR course

Consulting on Uruguay's first nationwide EHR initiative made the knowledge gap in healthcare interoperability concrete and widespread. That same year, in partnership with ACHISA, we launched the first online openEHR course offered anywhere in the world.

2012
Foundation of CaboLabs

CaboLabs was founded to bring specialized healthcare IT expertise to the organizations that needed it. The first international consulting projects began that year, working with companies in the Netherlands and the United States on clinical data architecture and standards integration.

2013
Release of EHRServer

EHRServer became the first open-source openEHR Clinical Data Repository available to the community — multi-tenant, production-ready and freely accessible to anyone building healthcare information systems on the standard.

Today
International consulting, software and education

CaboLabs works with healthcare organizations across multiple countries — consulting on healthcare interoperability and system integration, maintaining an education program that has trained hundreds of professionals, and developing software products that started as solutions to problems we kept encountering in real projects.

Knowledge Before Technology

Consulting, software and education are three expressions of the same accumulated practical experience from real healthcare projects.

Consulting applies it

When a customer faces an architecture decision, an integration problem or a standards question, we bring knowledge from having solved similar problems before — and the context to know which solution fits their specific situation.

Software encapsulates it

Atomik, the openEHR Toolkit and NoRA exist because we kept building the same solutions across engagements. Each product is a reusable form of expertise that organizations can deploy without reconstructing solutions from scratch.

Education shares it

In-house expertise is the most durable form of it. When teams understand the standards and the reasoning behind architectural decisions, they make better choices independently — on every future project, not just the one we work on together.
